OPINION:

As fuel costs continue to rise at unprecedented levels, the New Zealand transport sector is facing significant financial pressure, with many businesses experiencing tightening margins and increasing uncertainty.

Industry leaders say that in fast-moving conditions like these, access to accurate, timely, and trusted information has never been more critical.

“There are moments in business when the value of belonging to an industry association becomes unmistakably clear, and this is one of them,” says David Boyce CEO, New Zealand Trucking Association (NTA).

With global fuel prices driving rapid cost increases, transport operators are being forced to make quick decisions that directly impact the sustainability of their businesses. In this environment, the role of industry representation becomes essential.

“As an association, we are at the table with the Government and key stakeholders,” says Dave. “That means we can provide our members with clear, practical advice based on real insight, not speculation or media-driven narratives.”

While associations cannot control global market conditions, they play a vital role in ensuring businesses are supported to respond effectively.

Recent weeks have seen a surge in companies joining the NTA, reflecting a growing need for guidance, tools, and direct support.

“Businesses don’t just need headlines, they need solutions,” Dave says. “They need access to tools, reliable information, and someone they can call who understands the realities of running a transport business.”

The NTA is supporting members through a range of practical initiatives, including access to discounted fuel pricing, advisory services, and tools designed to improve financial resilience.

Among these is the Fuel Adjustment Sheet, which helps operators accurately calculate and pass through fluctuating fuel costs. In addition, the NTA’s Cost Modelling Service is helping businesses better understand their true operating costs, highlighting, in many cases, where pricing has not kept pace with real costs.

“If there is a positive to come out of this situation, it’s that many businesses are now reassessing how they price their services,” he says. “That clarity will ultimately lead to a stronger, more sustainable industry.”

As the sector continues to navigate rising costs and uncertainty, the message from industry leaders is clear: businesses do not need to face these challenges alone.

Dave concludes by saying, “Belonging to an association is about more than representation, it’s about connection, capability, and having access to the right information at the right time. Right now, that support has never been more important.”

The NTA is encouraging operators who are not currently members to consider joining, with membership options starting from $399 + GST per annum. Benefits include access to the Association’s Large Fuel Scheme, cost modelling services, and ongoing business support.
