Don and Anne Julian Commer truck on the road

Article published on line only

Don and Anne Julian’s lovely TS3 Commer began life hauling metal for Winstone out of Winstone’s Lunn Ave Quarry in Auckland.

Five years later Bruce London from Motuoapa, Turangi became the third owner. Bruce worked the truck on the Turangi-Tongariro power project and later, he became Turangi Firewood Supplies. He would deliver wood, metal and sand using a single axle tip trailer.

The Commer loaded up and ready to head off with a load of vintage machinery.

Don bought the truck from Bruce in 2004, it came with spare engines, gearboxes, windscreens and 26 years of assorted parts.

Don had a soft spot for Commers, especially the sound of the TS3, having driven a TS3 fertiliser spreader as a young man. This was followed by a six wheeler Commer with a V8 Perkins towing a three axle trailer delivering concrete products.

These days Don uses the truck to tow his vintage tractors, farm machinery and bulldozers to shows, tractor pulls and ploughing competitions towing a two axle transporter. He also enjoys participating in classic truck events.

He says the TS3 draws admirers wherever it goes.
